OUR PROCESS

From the lumber yard to the final food safe oil finish

  • Lumber yard

The first step is a trip to the local hardwood dealer.  They import exotic woods from around the world.  The planks are rough-milled and range from 6 to 8 feet long.

  • Woodshop

After the lumber yard the wood comes into the shop for the milling process.  Various machines are used to get the wood down to the individual blanks that make up the board.

  • Blanks

Here's what the blanks look like prior to glue-up.

  • Glue-up

Blanks are arraged in the clamps according to the size and color of the desired pattern.  Titebond glue is applied and the clamps are tightened.  You can never have enough clamps in the shop.

  • Sanding

Sanding is the most important step to achieve the elegant, fine furniture-like finish.

  • Laser Engraving

A proof is sent to you for one final look at what the image will look like.  After the proof is approved the final image is engraved on the board.

  • Food safe oil finish

After laser engraving, each board gets a good coat of Walrus Oil brand cutting board oil.

  • Finished board

After some light buffing to remove the excess oil the board is ready to ship.
